9. It is a shame!
這是一句可以用在許多適當(dāng)情況的口語(yǔ) (Catch-all phrase),是表示一種輕度的「遺憾」或「同情」(a form of sympathy or regret) 但沒(méi)有「羞恥」的意思。例如:
It is a shame that your car got stuck in the snow.(你的汽車(chē)陷在雪里,真糟糕。)
When I said, "I lost ten dollars from my pocket.",he replied, "It is a shame!"(當(dāng)我說(shuō):「我從口袋里掉了十塊錢(qián)」,他回答:「真遺憾?」)
至於 "What a shame",其實(shí)與 "it is a shame" 意思相似,也有 "It is too bad" 的味道。例如:
What a shame that his son's behavior is so rude.(他兒子的粗魯行為是令人遺憾的)
10. May it ever be thus!
(I hope it will not change; may the situation always remain the same.),通常用在喜慶時(shí),也有祝你與現(xiàn)在一樣的健康快樂(lè)之意。(I hope you are always as healthy and happy as now.) 例如:
We are wonderful friends; may it ever be thus!(我們是好友,愿永遠(yuǎn)如此!)
He said to the newly weds, "May it ever be thus!"(他對(duì)新婚夫婦說(shuō):「愿你們永遠(yuǎn)這樣的恩愛(ài)、幸福」)
11. Am I being petty?
而 Am I petty? 所以為了「自尊心」,通常不說(shuō)"I am petty",只說(shuō)"I am being petty." 同理:
Am I being over-reactive?(或 over sensitive?)(我是反應(yīng)過(guò)火或過(guò)份敏感嗎?)
Are you being in bad mood?(你情緒不好嗎?)
(主詞可用任何人稱(chēng)代名詞 you, we, he, she, they 等,動(dòng)詞可用任何時(shí)態(tài)。)
12. Stay tuned!
(Stay where you are in the same channel),但也可以表示對(duì)一件事情的繼續(xù)討論 (to keep continuing the same issue)。
Stay tuned, there will be more on this subject tomorrow.(稍等,這個(gè)問(wèn)題明天再談。)
Stay tuned(或 wait a moment)I will be right back.(指馬上回來(lái))
但是:
We have to stay tuned regarding the name change of our school.(我們必須等待校名的變更)(等待時(shí)間較長(zhǎng))
13. You can say that again!
這句話的意思是「我同意你」(I agree with you.)或「你對(duì)了」(You are right.)例如:
When the professor spoke on human rights, the students responded, "You can say that again!"(當(dāng)教授談到時(shí);學(xué)生回答說(shuō):「你說(shuō)得對(duì)!」)
When we heard Mr. Clinton's speech on tax reduction, my wife turned to me and said, "He can say that again!"(當(dāng)我們聽(tīng)到柯林頓先生減稅的講演時(shí),內(nèi)人轉(zhuǎn)頭對(duì)我說(shuō):「他說(shuō)得對(duì)!」)
14. Let me sleep on it.
意思是「讓我考慮一下」或「讓我想想看」(let me think about it.)(這與 sleep 沒(méi)有關(guān)系)例如:
Let me sleep on your proposal.(讓我考慮你的建議。)
When he asked if she wanted to stay with him, she said, "Let me sleep on it."(當(dāng)他問(wèn)她要不要留下來(lái),她說(shuō):「要想想看」。)
在 "let me sleep on it." 中,me 可用其他人稱(chēng)代名詞(him, her, you, us, them 等),it 有時(shí)也用 this 或 that 代替。
15. Take heart!
意思是「勇敢些」、「不必苦惱」、「振作起來(lái)」(be brave; don't worry; don't let things get you down)(多半指感情方面,比較 emotional)例如:
Take heart, and the situation will be better.(不必怕,情況會(huì)好些。)
Take heart, I am sure you will be successful in the future.(振作起來(lái)吧,我相信你將來(lái)會(huì)成功的。)
16. Tune him out!
意思是「別聽(tīng)他的」,「不必理會(huì)他」(don't listen to him; don't pay attention to him.)例如:
Mr. Lee just talked nonsense; tune him out.(李先生在瞎扯,別聽(tīng)他的。)
I am going to tune her out when she begins to speak on the subject.(當(dāng)她談及主題時(shí),我不想理會(huì)她。)
The husband tuned out his wife when he was watching the football game.(老公看足球賽時(shí)沒(méi)有理會(huì)太座。)
(tune out 有時(shí)也可連在一起使用)(在 "tune him out" 這句口語(yǔ)里,動(dòng)詞 tune 可用任何時(shí)態(tài);受詞 him 也可用其他人稱(chēng)代名詞。)
