《秘窗》改編自史蒂芬·金的《午夜四點(diǎn)》(Four Past Midnight)小說(shuō)集的第二部分《秘密窗，秘密園》(Secret Window，　Secret Garden)。暢銷小說(shuō)作家莫特遭遇共枕多年的妻子紅杏出墻后心灰意懶。他的生活步入低谷，一個(gè)神經(jīng)質(zhì)陌生人指責(zé)莫特竊取了其小說(shuō)創(chuàng)意，他居住的木屋里有扇窗戶經(jīng)常發(fā)出些古怪的聲音，甚至像是被人猛擊一樣顫栗。在這一切神秘事件的背后，到底是誰(shuí)操縱者?他是人還是什么怪物?他到底有什么目的?

Shooter：You read it?

Rainey：I did.

Shooter：I imagine it rang a bell, didn''t it?

Rainey：Oh, it certainly did. When did you write it?

Shooter：I thought you would ask that. I wrote it seven years ago, 1997.

Rainey：Drop it.

Shooter：Drop it?

Rainey：You said you wrote your story in 1997. I wrote mine in late 1994.It was published for the first time in June 1995 in a magazine.Nice try, Mr. Shooter, but I beat you by two years.

Shooter：You lie!

Rainey：No I don''t.

Shooter：If we do start to fight, it''s not going to end until one or the other of us is dead. Hold your water. I''m just getting my smoke s. I will give you three days. Show me the magazine with your sto-ry in it—if there is such a magazine--and I''ll be back.

舒特：你讀完手稿了?

雷尼：讀完了。

舒特：我猜它讓你想起什么來(lái)了吧?對(duì)不對(duì)?

雷尼：你說(shuō)你的故事是1997年寫(xiě)下的。我的可是1994年年底寫(xiě)成的，1995年6月第一次發(fā)表在一本雜志上。干得不錯(cuò)，舒特先生。不過(guò)我比你領(lǐng)先了兩年。

舒特：你撒謊。

雷尼：我沒(méi)有。

舒特：咱們倆要是打起來(lái)的話，那就非得打到有一方先死掉不可。別害怕，我不過(guò)是拿香煙而已。我給你3天時(shí)間。你把那本有你的故事的雜志拿來(lái)給我看——如果真有這么本雜志的話。我會(huì)回來(lái)找你的。
